The beginning of a revolution always has unexpected collateral effects.

The construction of the first railroads actually provided a lot of business for older transport methods like canals. Had to get the iron and steel to and from the construction sites and often that was the best way.

Of course, the end was that the railroads doomed the canals in most areas.

The impact on traditional advertising is collateral from the internet. As you've said, you've got to be known to have a chance of getting profitable, and you've got to be advertised to be known.

Once you ARE known and have to start focusing on the profitability side, the equation changes. Amazon, for example, is signficantly cutting back on advertising and online "placement" deals. They've hit the point where they've got to start thinking about profits. It'll happen to the others too. Eventually if you can't make money you can't advertise. VC and IPO money eventually runs out...
