Thestreet.com article : "Opening the Floodgates on PC Makers"
By James J. Cramer

1/5/00 5:14 PM ET

Wait a minute, put that coat down -- Gateway
(GTW:NYSE - news) just stank up the joint and we
have to fumigate the PC positions.

Here is a classic collateral play. What is bad for
Gateway may not be bad for everybody that
competes in that space, but you know they will get sold down. These new
after-hours trading folk are dumping their Compaq (CPQ:NYSE - news) and their
Intel (INTC:Nasdaq - news) and I wouldn't mind picking some up if you want to
hit me! (At a discount of course!)

Gateway is one of those companies I have always
been loath to short. I like the stores too much. But it
will be tomorrow's focus, unless Beyond.com
(BYND:Nasdaq - news) still has some supporters
after that unbelievable Wall Street Journal piece last year.

Tomorrow there will be two camps: Those who think the problems are
Gateway-specific, and those who think that the problems are industry-specific.

I wish I could tell you where I am in the dichotomy. I guess it is safe to say that,
because I like Compaq, I think it is Gateway-specific. But I am one who lets the
facts get in the way of a good story. So let's wait and see.

Hi El ... Interesting articles about the Inacom deal

It seems that the analysts are split about the ICO deal.

1/05/00 - Compaq to Buy Computer Reseller's Distribution Capabilities

tscn.com

From The article:

In an interview, Mike Winkler, the senior vice president who heads Compaq's PC business, said Inacom's assembly facilities in Omaha, Indianapolis, Ontario, Calif., and Iselin, N.J.,are running at about half capacity.

"We think we can fill those up easily," he said.
He said the deal has been in the works for about 45 days.

The Inacom purchase will allow Compaq to cut costs in a variety of ways, including finally achieving what's considered the nirvana of the PC-making business -- having no inventory, and only building systems once orders are in hand.

Winkler said the Inacom facilities will build Deskpro, Prosignia and some Armada systems, and jobs won't be lost at Houston's factories as a result.

"We think we can get that much incremental business," he said. He also said that Compaq's new division will continue to work with IBM and HP, but did not mention Dell.

"That's gravy," he said, referring to the revenues from sales of HP and IBM products.

Are they talking about some growth here?.

From the article:

Analyst Tom Cal with SoundView Technology Group said it will take several years before the acquisition can be judged.

"I think it's probably good for Inacom," he said. "Whether it is for Compaq, well, the question is: Why didn't they do it sooner?"
