NHP,

I think simplistically the most significant difference between pocketable Smart Cards and current removable flash memory storage is capacity. If medical records are to be comprehensive (demographics, insurance information, relevant written records, discharge summaries, consultative notes) and contemplate the inclusion of graphic items such as chest x-rays, EKG's, mammograms, CT scans (?), etc., then a 8 or 16 or 32MB PIC card with a floppy or PCMCIA adapter seems like a very nice solution.

Simpler items like phone and credit cards and the like are not likely to require the same capacity.

I am interested in knowing if anybody has insight into the Smart Card market. I know that Europe is way ahead in this regard. Nowadays you can't even find a pay phone that will accept a few pocket "groschen". It is aggravating at times and makes you wonder if technology is really as cutting edge as we all like to believe. Also, wireless transactions have the potential of reducing the breadth of markets the Smart Card industry now serves. A good example would be cell phones leading to the complete elimination of pay phones or a wireless portable PC that accesses a central database for confirmation of personal data included in such items as immigration cards or passports (coupled with some form of biometric verification).

I have a small position in DRXR which I purchased a while back. Otherwise I have found it difficult to locate smaller companies with a leg up in the Smart Card market.
