RE:"Hey Elmer, why are you bringing up all this Dresden stuff up when mighty Intel with all of their fabulous Fabs can't supply one of their best customers (ie: Gateway) with enough chips? "...

Excellent point. Gateway was probably Intels 2nd most loyal company behind DELL...and Intel dumped on them...

Eplace, <What the heck is Intel going to do when AMD does get Dresden shipping parts and they start moving even more Athlons?>

What the heck is Intel going to do? Simple. Intel will just keep turning the crank on all five 0.18u fabs as they reach even higher volumes. By that time, Dresden should be starting its production ramp with very low volumes, especially considering the potential die sizes of Athlons with on-die caches.

I'm bringing it up because I believe the reason Intel is having problems suppling it's best customers is becuase demand is so high. Both Intel and AMD are leaving money on the table and both because of capacity constraints. If Intel had a 1.9 $Billion fab sitting there producing nothing while customers were losing money for lack of product, I think you would hear a real outcry. AMD has such a useless fab and nobody wants to talk about it.

What will Intel do when Dresden does come on line? For one thing, Intel will ramp their .18u process across all their main fabs and greatly increase their total capacity. Intel is in the permit process to build another fab in Ocatillo Az along side their Fab12 MegaFab. They are converting their Fab 17 in Hudson Mass. over from a DEC process to Intel's own process to produce more .18u products. They are converting their development fab in Oregon, formerly D1B to a production Fab, Fab20, joining the other huge Fab 15. They are re-tooling their old Fab5, also in Oregon to produce Flash, joining their Fab 7 & 9 Flash Fabs in Rio Rancho NM, along side Fab 11 one of their largest logic Fabs. They have just opened Fab 18 in Israel for Microprocessor production. This is another huge fab and joins Fab 8, also in Israel though dedicated to older products. Fab 10 & 14 are large Fabs in Ireland and there is another development Fab in Santa Clara, D2 which also produces production material. The production capacity dwarfs all others in the world and I believe, though I don't know for a fact, that they are running flat out. I think the significance of this is somehow lost.
