Oh and BTW even if the silicon is free the packaging/test costs alone exceed $10.

Not for a BGA tested on in house testers at TSMC.

Edit: I think people in the consumer electronics market think $50 is a big difference, however, after re-reading your post, I can see this wasn't what you were talking about.

Excellent point.

SCUMbria ignores the fact that the component suppliers should make a profit, the PC OEM should make a profit, the shipping company should make a profit, and the reseller should make a profit, and some money should be "set aside" for downstream service.
