LINUX news......Intel to Make Linux-Based Web Products

By BRIDGE NEWS

AN FRANCISCO, Jan. 5 -- The Intel Corporation disclosed
plans today to market its own brand of Internet access appliances
that use the Linux operating system, the open-source competitor to
Microsoft's proprietary Windows.

Intel, a maker of microprocessors, said the devices would take many
forms, including screen telephones and computer-like boxes. All of the
new products will use the Intel Celeron chip that powers many low-cost
computers.

Intel, which is based in Santa Clara, Calif., plans to sell the devices to
Internet service providers and telecommunications companies that will
then market them to consumers.

The cost of the hardware to service providers will vary, probably from
about $300 to $700, while the cost of the devices to consumers will
depend on how the service providers structure their pricing.
