Someone asked a while back about how easy it is to transport rigs to other geographic areas.

It is very 'easy'. That is why they are called MODU's (Mobile Offshore Drilling Units). You can either tow the rig with a typical tug boat or you can do a 'dry tow' aboard a heavy lift vessel.

The latter is faster and safer (although a heavy lift ship recently sank, reducing the worldwide fleet to 10).

The cost is higher for a dry tow. You are looking at about $2 million (very roughly) to move from one major market to another...say North Sea to GOM.

Drillers move rigs all the time to take advantage of different markets.

BTW, I agree with Post Patrol's selection of PKD and have previously so written in Offshore Drilling Bits. Remember how fast this goes to $5 when it starts moving.

Boom 2000 - You ain't seen nothing like it.
