The calumniation that African- American Republicans must endure is horrendous. It takes particular strength of character to assume a high visibility position as a black person. J.C. Watts has been a graceful and articulate spokesman for Republicans, conservatives, and African- Americans, and is one of those who comes to mind when I defend public service as an honorable profession. I hope that he continues his ascent in the party........

>Unfortunately for you, I believe those remarks have cheapened your campaign and alienated black Americans who resent being used as political pawns.<

Of course this subset of black Americans will hardly garner much attention, as they aspire to the American Dream and usually avoid fanfare. Unfortunately there seems to be so many blacks who apparently delight in being used as political pawns. These folk are the first and only folk to which the press turns when discussing blacks in politics. American blacks, being as non-thinking as most other Americans, therefore flow with the group think of the majority as presented in the press, viciously criticising any self-possessed black who would rise above them. Mediocrity loves company, and this is especially true with black mediocrity.

Colin Powell responds to Gore's racist campaign manager:

COLIN POWELL fires back at remarks by Gore's campaign chief on GOP blacks.

In a letter to Gore, the former Joint Chiefs chairman says he is "disappointed and offended" by Donna Brazile's comments about him and Oklahoma Rep. Watts. Brazile, who is black, was quoted as accusing the GOP of using the black Republicans to hide its inattention to black youth. "Let's not start the new century by playing the polarizing 'race card,' " Powell says. Bradley steers clear of the furor.

A Gore spokesman praises Powell as "a great American hero," but adds: "No matter how distinguished" Powell and Watts are, "it isn't a substitute for an agenda that supports African-Americans." The GOP also jumped on Gore's vow to appoint Joint Chiefs members who back letting gays serve openly in the military as a second slap at Powell, who has opposed that.
