RE: TMFGrape's JDSU article. Found this on JDSU thread. This is a good read for JDSU watchers.

Message 12476674

TMFGrape, as we said earlier, does not understand Gorilladom and, unfortunately, is using G. Moore's "young Gorilla" statement to support his unsupported claim. I did lift the following paragraph for your convenience, because its logical conclusion is Kingliness, rather than Simianism: (emphasis added)

"One other characteristic that Fisher considers important to technology companies is having engineering leadership rather than just a lot of patents. While JDSU does have a number of patents, it's even more important to note its engineering expertise. The company employs a high number of physicists/photonic engineers. As you can probably guess, these kinds of people don't grow on trees. It would be difficult for any potential competitor to put together a group of qualified people that are as strong as the group that has been assembled by JDSU. Additionally, there are very few suppliers for most of the equipment needed to manufacture pump laser chips. Therefore, any new competitors would have to design and build their own machines as well as the products. The end result is that JDSU's competitors face high barriers to entry."

I am NOT slamming JDSU, here. It is an important King for me. But I am giving up the Gorilla hunt in photonics.

Marc, good post. My wife too has undergone that "paradigm shift" of cellphone from nice to have toy to important everyday life-assisting device :-)

I think wired phone lines will not go away per se, but the traffic will be overwhelmingly data. Maybe that will bring about widespread DSL service...?

I was trying to develop a handheld GG basket, and the more I read the more it feels like herding cats. I have PALM and NOK included (NOK as an owner of Symbian and in its own right); you gotta have the chipset, hence QCOM. What else would you add?
