You give me a dollar bill. I tear it in four and give the four pieces back to you. You still have a dollar. You deposit a share with BoNY, it gives you a "receipt". You keep it intact or you tear the receipt into four. Same difference.

You bought a 100 shares at 40. You want to take some profits. Minimum lot size is 100. Your choice is all or nothing. Split, and now you have 400. You sell some multiple of 100 and keep the rest. Liquidity. Your friend wants to buy, but can't afford 100@190. Split and he/she can now buy some multiple of 100 at 190/4. Liquidity. If there are more buyers out there who can't afford a piece of the action at 190, price goes up. If more sellers locked in who want only one foot out but not abandon ship, price goes down. Demand/supply/price for slices of a cake change according to the size of the slice.
