I agree with you.

I am a computer programmer at a major financial institution so I know how much was spent fixing potential problems.

I also know that without any doubt if that money had not been spent we would have an enormous disaster on our hands.

It's a credit to systems shops everywhere that things have gone so well. Testing was very thorough, but minor problems may still surface.

In fact there have already been many problems. They are just being fixed behind the scenes because they are not show stoppers.

Billing's the least of problems. Anyone can dispute a bill. Besides, systems sweep transactions on a periodic basis, if not, then daily or weekly, that's more frequent than on the monthly cycle. Most shops verify transaction patterns well before the end of month, and have reconciliation periods before the posting. Sloppy institutions will always have problems.

It's not uncommon for additional systems procurement, such as hardware for testing and staging deployment, and new software upgrades to be included in remediation efforts of any kind. It remains to be seen what happens when these extra resources can be redeployed after the Y2k support period.
