Korean IT exports estimated at $44.5 bil. this year Exports in Korea's information and telecommunication (IT) sector this year are expected to reach $44.5 billion, the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) announced yesterday. The figure is a 14 percent increase over last year's $39.8 billion, according to the ministry. IT sector imports are likely to climb 22 percent over last year's figure to stand at $31 billion, creating a trade surplus of $13.5 billion. The country's total exports for 2000 are projected at $157 billion while imports are estimated at $144 billion, representing an 8.9 percent and 20.3 percent increase, respectively, over last year. With the total trade surplus expected to post $13 billion, the IT sector's contribution to the country's exports is expected to be significant, according to the ministry. It added that most of the trade surplus for this year would occur in the IT sector. The export of CDMA (code division multiple access) handsets reached $2.06 billion last year, a 270 percent growth figure over 1998, said the ministry. Overall, wireless equipment export posted a 118 percent jump over 1998. The country's low-priced personal computers took a large share of the U.S. low-end PC market and information equipment exports posted a 46 percent increase over last year, said the ministry. Broadcasting equipment exports rose by 78 percent while semiconductor exports totaled $18.9 billion last year, an increase of 11 percent. The ministry said the strong export growth projections were based on the continuing global economic recovery, accelerated pace of Asian market expansion and strengthened Korean export competitiveness as the value of yen continues to climb. Continued expansion of the DRAM (dynamic random access memory) and TFT-LCD (thin film transistor liquid crystal display) markets is also expected to contribute to the growth of exports in the sector. In particular, CDMA handset exports are expected to show huge leaps in growth this year as wireless equipment gains increasing importance in the global marketplace.
