JD: This looks uncomfortably identical to the pitch that Gates gave yesterday. Certainly no one will be able to differentiate the two press releases unless they look very carefully. Both guys are talking about futures and vaporware, both are talking about connected appliances in the home and refrigerators refilling your beer supply by calling the liquor store over the internet, etc. etc. Real shipping products and revenues don't enter into it for any company.

If you look carefully, Sun appears to be closer to reality, with a much more impressive list of partners and obviously years more work done on its Java/Jini technology. MSFT's "Universal Plug and Play" could well turn out to be 75% counterfeit like the original PC plug'n'play.

The question is, who's going to look carefully? It will be interesting to see how the press takes this. It's the part of the computer industry I like the least: dependency on pre-announcement, vapor, hype, and BS as a substitute for products that that take longer to develop than the visions driving them.

It's all going to come true. It's just the interim posturing that drives me nuts, and confuses everyone. Contrived demos won't correct a correction.
