Uncle Frank,

...have you verified your withdrawal plan...?

I verified it yesterday with our tax professional. He is conservative, and speaks from the point of view of the annuity studies mentioned at the Retire Early website. He thinks that the amortization method pays out too high, and he has a point. But in my case it will only be for 5 years, and then I can change the amounts of the distribution.

Another check would be to look at the worksheets included in the .pdf kit found on vanguard.com. This has amortization tables you will need. The server was balky yesterday, it was easier for me to save directly to disk before opening. The federal interest rate was a month old, the new one is at pmstax.com.

Further confirmation is in the IRS Publication 590 on IRAs, which contains a few facts. It refers to IRS Notice 89-25 in Internal Revenue Cumulative Bulletin 1989-1, which is more helpful. I got both of these at the local IRS office.

About all I haven't done is to have an accountant do the math and get a binding letter from his/her E&O carrier. The math isn't hard, there's even a Java calculator at geocities.com.
It's not difficult to do it right, but as you point out, the penalties for a dumb mistake can be punishing.

Frank

Hi Uncle Frank, and everyone.
What a terrible Naz day today and more to come for all markets tomorrow.
Wonder how we know when the bleeding has stopped and its a "buying opportunity".
I know I know, its always a good time to buy a Gorilla or gorilla maybe.

Interesting coincidence of life:
Many years ago when I was a young teacher in Arizona, my principal and I became good friends (we still occasionally phone or write) and she shared a poem that I always remembered called "Anyway".
I asked her for it about two years ago and she could not find it. I could not find it either so put the thought aside.
Last month, walking down the streets of Park City Utah, I noticed a small Indian "oddments to buy" shop and in the window, posted, was....
You guessed it

Anyway

People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered,
Love Them Anyway
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives,
Do Good Anyway
If you are successful you win false friends and true enemies
Succeed Anyway
The good you do will be forgotten tomorrow,
Do Good Anyway
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable,
Be Honest and Frank anyway
What you spent years building may be destroyed overnight
Build anyway
People really need help but may attack you if you help them
Help people anyway
Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth
Give The World The Best You've Got Anyway.

From a sign on the wall of shishu Bhavan, the children's home in Calcutta.

(And from a Libertarian point of view, do all this because you want to, not because someone is forcing you.)
The poem still delights me.
