Firesale on LNUX today following upgrade and news:Oracle to deploy VA Linux-based server farm
12:46 Wednesday 5 January 2000
By NATHAN COCHRANE ORACLE will deploy a Linux-based server farm sourced from Californian solutions company, VA Linux, for its NetLedger accounting application server provider.
Launched in August last year, NetLedger is one of a new breed of services that provide software-style of functionality over Internet networks. It was among the world's first ASPs, competing with Australia's Solution 6 in the North American market.

The upgrade will run Oracle 8i over several hundred VA Linux FullOn 2x2 rackmount servers.

It is the latest win for VA Linux, the world's biggest provider of Linux PCs and server solutions, which had a spectacular initial public offering last month surging 10-fold on its first day of trading.

Separately, VA will publicly launch SourceForge, a portal for open source applications developers working on a variety of platforms including Linux, Windows, Palm, Mac and BeOS. The company claims to host 700 projects from 3000 developers in 76 countries.

"On SourceForge, developers can realise the best of both worlds,' said VA Linux's CEO Larry Augustin. "The quality and flexibility of open source software development and the extensive resources available through a well-staffed, reponsive application service provider.'

VA Linux will also appoint Bob Russo as general manager of worldwide field operations. Russo was senior vice-president of worldwide field operations at Synopsys for six years following his position as general manager for the mini-computer division at Cray Research.
