E*TRADE Awards $1 Million To Individual Investor In First-Ever eMILLION MANIA
Contest

Winning Contestant Tops Wall Street Professionals by Accurately Predicting
Year-end Dow

MENLO PARK, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ --
E*TRADE Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: EGRP) today announced the winner of its national
"eMILLION MANIA" contest, which celebrates the growing power of individual
investors who are taking control of their own financial futures by investing
online. The contest winner, Robert Richard Tokarchek of Westlake Village, CA,
accurately predicted the close of the Dow Jones industrial average on Dec. 31,
1999 at 11,497.12.
"Mr. Tokarchek's success illustrates the intelligence and market savvy of
today's individual investor," said Ben Stein, popular economist and co-host of
Comedy Central's Win Ben Stein's Money. "Mr. Tokarchek beat the predictions of
many of Wall Street's top investment professionals, which shows that given the
choice and the right tools of knowledge and information, today's individual
investors are able to make smart decisions about investing and take better
control of their financial futures."
"E*TRADE provides its customers with unprecedented access to financial
information, from comprehensive data and analytical tools to world-class
investor education resources," said Michael Sievert, vice president of
marketing at E*TRADE Group, Inc. "There is a monumental shift in how people
will live their lives in the 21st century. People want to take control of
their finances and E*TRADE empowers the individual investor to do just that.
We congratulate Mr. Tokarchek on his success."
E*TRADE's "eMILLION MANIA" contest, co-sponsored by Oldsmobile, invited
individual investors to predict the closing price of the Dow Jones industrial
average on December 31, 1999. Contestants also had the chance to win six
Oldsmobile Intrigue GL sedans, which were given away weekly, from October 23
to November 27, 1999. Contestants Steve Hawthorne, Lois Penner, Jamie Austin,
Jim Devoe, Erik Klein, and Stan Wiecek were the lucky automobile winners.
"Oldsmobile strongly supports E*TRADE in celebrating the power of the
individual," said Karen Francis, general manager, Oldsmobile. "Our customers
are smart, independent self-starters who know what they want out of life.
Along with E*TRADE, we believe in delivering just the right products and
services to these self-directed consumers."
As a recognition of the power of individual investing, the thousands of
entrants who came within 20 points of the correct closing price of the Dow
Jones will receive a free copy of the E*TRADE Investment Kit. Valued at
$49.95, the Investment Kit contains everything needed to quickly become part
of the online investing revolution: an E*TRADE investing application kit, the
best-selling Motley Fool Investment Guide and important information about
online investing. In addition, this gift includes a $100 investment voucher
that is automatically deposited into the customer's new E*TRADE account.
