Sorry- it is up to mothers by necessity- if you want your genes (as a female) to propagate you will learn to protect your offspring- if you cannot learn to do this you are doing laps at the shallow end of the gene pool.

It isn't a MORAL argument I am making, I don't CARE about fault in this instance- all I am discussing are biological predispositions and cause and effect.

I am not emotional about this. Although child abuse disturbs me greatly- I don't see much point in allowing emotion to affect my mental processes any more than it already does. This is the way I see it:

There are breaks on the behavior of natural fathers (agressive and sexual breaks) that are absent in the case of step fathers and boyfriends. These natural breaks on behavior do not affect ALL males equally, but we don't know WHICH males are most affected.

These behaviors often come to light only AFTER significant damage has been visited upon the child.

SO- I conclude that unless mothers wish to remain alone after having children (not a horrible idea) THEN they must be taught to be very careful of males not related to their children entering the household. The burden must be on the mother primarily or you are asking the fox to guard the henhouse- now morally speaking the fox is a very sneaky fellow and definitely in the wrong but that is no reason for the farmer to give up? Is it? I grant you that the farmer and the fox don't usually have a sexual relationship going- but I think women CAN be taught to be more wary of men that they allow to enter a pre-existing family. This needs to be treated along the same lines as postpartum depression - a time when WOMEN can seriously injure their children- and the WOMEN must be watched closely.
