Firstar Corporation Named as Top Stock Pick by Goldman Sachs
MILWAUKEE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 6, 2000--Firstar Corporation (NYSE:FSR - news) was recently named as the top regional bank stock by Goldman Sachs & Company. Annually, Goldman Sachs has its equity research analysts select one stock each per industry, which constitutes the firms ''favorite stocks for 2000'' list. Lori Appelbaum, Goldman Sachs' regional bank analyst, selected Firstar as the top pick in the industry.

For the year 2000, Goldman Sachs selected only 89 stocks for their ''favorite stock'' list. According to Goldman Sachs announcement, ''the expected 12-month price return of our 2000 list is 35 percent compared with an expected price gain of four percent for the S&P 500. The style and size of our 2000 list is skewed more toward growth stocks and, to a lesser extent, is more biased toward large-cap names than was the case last year. Indeed, four of every five names on our list for 2000 are growth stocks, and roughly half are large-cap names.''

Being named the top regional bank stock for 2000 by Goldman Sachs follows the recent announcement by the U.S. Equity Research division of Warburg Dillon Read LLC which ranked Firstar as the number one bank based on projected 2001 performance measures. Warburg Dillon Read noted ''Firstar is our new fundamental star, based on our 2001 estimates.''

Firstar Corporation is a regional bank holding company with approximately $71 billion in total assets and a market capitalization of $25.1 billion as of September 30, 1999. Firstar has nearly 1,200 full-service banking offices and more than 2,200 ATM locations in Ohio, Wisconsin, Missouri, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kansas, Arizona and Florida.
