(Q.UME) are down amid reports the Securities and Futures Commission may not approve a merger between the company and Worldwide Semiconductor Manufacturing because of procedural irregularities. Also, the overnight fall on the Nasdaq Composite Index, which local investors consider a barometer for the local market, has damped sentiment in local technology shares, including those of United Microelectronics. At 0205 GMT (9:05 p.m. EST), United Microelectronics was down NT$4.00 (US$1=NT$30.885) to NT$111.50 on volume of 51.9 million shares.
