<<A practical question, can Q's 2.5G data be offered to consumers @ a reasonable (flat rate) cost. Let's say $40-50/month w/unlimited access w/DSL-like speeds.

Is the infrastructure in place for a national roll-out?>>

John, The answer to the second question is easy. Yes. Sprint PCS's existing network can be used. That is the beauty of HDR.

To the flat rate question, this is what IJ hopes will happen, and he addressed it during the HDR CC. The service providers will need to take the ball here.

1xr4t will be used in handsets that will allow current handsets to proform at 64. That isnt as good as DSL but the Infrastructure is there now(sprint etc). This will get everybodies attention whille HDR is being upgraded onto current infra(very cheap and easy). Therfore I think MCOm will have a tough time competing. I would also mention that 1xrt is part of the cell phone one already has and is paying for therfore there would be no need for paying extra for MCOM. I have no Idea what the data rates will be but considering HDR target is 30-40 I assume we will be in the ball park. I have nothing against MCOM but the future aint with them. As for Q appreciation:If Q owns CDMA market then will develop HDR and 2.5G market whats that worth?? Their current forward PE of 130 is based on voice only, NOHDR No CHINA. Therfore though it might not be cheap it is not as ridiculously priced as you and others might think(CSCO is 100PE).

Q's pricing for data service,

from their HDR presentation,

By year 2000 .35 / MB (*) dropping to
year 2007 .08 / MB

(*) HDR is cost competitive with current Internet access flat rate pricing.

Is MCOM? No, I didn't think so. They have no voice to pay for
their deployment. And they have limited service. And it is in that
unpredictable unlicensed ISM band. So, if any other service becomes
popular in the ISM band, then MCOM transceivers are unusable.
MCOM can do a servicable job of reading power meters but they are
not going to be a meaningful data transmission scheme.

CDMA is simply the most efficient design for sharing limited RF spectrum
for bursty data transmission. And that means voice and net traffic.
