Gst, your asking the wrong guy. I only use a margin account for shorting or hedging. I've never bought a stock on margin in my life.
But, to answer your question its simple. When an investors liabilities exceed assets a margin call is made making the investor to throw cash in his/her account or lose securities in the account.
One of my best friends got killed several years ago on margin calls. He ended going bankrupt, but he's still one of my best friends.
