EDigital Shares Rise on Agreements for Downloaded Music Player San Diego, Jan. 6 (Bloomberg) -- E.Digital Corp., a designer of electronic products that play music downloaded from the Web, said it will integrate its technology with RioPort Inc.'s digital audio platform, sending its shares up 43 percent. Closely held RioPort will allow consumers to download secure digital audio content to its players. San Diego-based e.Digital has developed an operating system that can read multiple audio formats. E.Digital said it's working with Lucent Technologies Inc. and Microsoft Corp. to develop alternatives to the so-called MP3 technology, which allows people to download high-quality audio, often for free. Record companies say the MP3 format isn't secure and can't prevent users from making multiple copies. It also lets artists distribute their music cheaper than record companies can. ``We are working with record companies to make sure our music player will support their content when they make it available,' said Fred Falk, e.Digital president and chief executive. Yesterday, the company said it licensed its portable Internet music-player design to closely held Maycom Co. for use in its digital player that uses the MP3 technology. It also unveiled a portable Internet music player that's capable of holding more than 5 1/2 hours of audio files. The company's shares, which have more than quadrupled since Dec. 23, rose 2 89/128 to 8 121/128 in trading of more than 21 million, more than 11 times its three-month daily average. It was the 12th most-active stock in U.S. trading. Jan/06/2000 16:47
