Hi tejek:

AMD will have their platter full in Q1 meeting Athlon demand when GTW officially jumps aboard next week and when purchases delayed owing to y2k kick in!

A more subtle demand factor is hinted at in the following exchange in Maximum PC magazine as presented earlier by John Petzinger:

"After finishing the December Gear of the Year issue, I have a burning question.
The AMD Athlon was named Processor of the Year. But only one of the seven editors listed has an Athlon-based home system. Is there a reason that the P-III is the processor of choice for your editors, despite the Athlon "Gear of the Year" status?

(btw, the one exception IS the editor-in-chief)
The answer is rather long to type, but ends with this:

Most MaximumPC editors customized their home rigs when the fastest AMD processor was the K6-III, which , while formidable, was not as attractive a CPU as the Pentium III. I suspect more of us will jump to the Athy when we grow tired of our "slow" 500MHz and 600MHz P-III processors.

To spell out the subtlety, PWeeIII attrition will account for a huge surge in "spry Athy" sales over the next couple of years. The sample of editors of this magazine are a microcosm of the PC universe...Only 1 editor is using the Athlon now but several (if not all?) will likely switch to the Athlon at the time of their next purchase!

At this juncture, Dell's dragging of their heels is not a concern...Personally as the gap widens between the Athlon and the PWeeIII over the next 6 months, Dell will be forced by the laws of economics to jump aboard, imho! Dell cannot affort to stand still and Intel can't afford too many more sweetheart deals with Dell!

<"I doubt that Dell would break away from Intel," said Mark Edelstone, a Morgan Stanley Dean Witter analyst. "AMD has a shot to do very well with their Athlon processor. And it helps to have Gateway as a customer." >

Edelstone has some clout too. I wonder when he is planning an upgrade AMD to reflect what he means by "to do very well with their Athlon processor".
