Consumer credit tripled in November, Fed says, as spending remained strong

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumers, borrowing heavily to fund holiday season shopping sprees, boosted their purchases on credit during November at the sharpest rate in four years, the Federal Reserve said Friday.

Consumer credit outstanding soared by $15.6 billion -- triple the revised $5.2 billion increase in October for the largest monthly rise since a $17.3 billion surge in November 1995.
