LAS VEGAS, Jan 6, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

3Com(R) HomeConnect(TM) ADSL Modem Dual Link Provides Shared
High-Speed Internet Access to Multiple PCs in the Home
Providing a simple solution to share ADSL access between two PCs at the same time, 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS) today introduced a revolutionary dual-active-port DSL modem. The 3Com(R) HomeConnect(TM) ADSL Modem Dual Link furnishes a USB (universal serial bus) and an Ethernet port, ideal for homes with changing PC needs -- such as consumers who use a permanent PC and bring home a company-issued laptop as well. Now, consumers can use their "always-on," broadband connections on a permanent PC -- and add another with little effort.

"3Com is offering a simple product that allows PC and laptop users to benefit from a high-speed ADSL Internet connection, including simultaneous Internet and phone access," said Howard Rubin, Technical Marketing Manager for 3Com. "By using both the Ethernet and USB ports on a single ADSL modem, users can simultaneously connect two PCs to the modem -- and talk on the phone at the same time -- resulting in shared Internet access and higher productivity."

"A dual-port modem provides additional value and flexibility," noted Amy Harris, Research Analyst at International Data Corporation (IDC). "Our 1999 Residential Telecommunications Survey of 1,500 households found that 52 percent of households interested in purchasing high-speed Internet access services have more than one PC."

"With multiple PC homes on the rise, 3Com is committed to providing flexible products to connect PCs in the home, to each other and to the office LAN over a shared broadband connection," Mr. Rubin said. "As consumer lifestyles become more dependent on an easy connection to the Web, 3Com?s promise of simplicity and reliability is increasingly more appealing to today?s `on-the-go? worker."

Installation Manager
3Com has created Dual Link Manager, an HTML-based graphic interface designed to simplify the modem installation process. Dual Link Manager runs on any Internet browser and walks the user through the simple installation process step-by-step.

Instant Update Utility
To provide the consumer with the latest software updates, the Dual Link modem also ships with Instant Update software. Instant Update checks for updates as often as the user desires; if new code is available, it is automatically downloaded.

Inner/Outer Pair Autodetect
3Com?s Inner/Outer Pair Autodetect feature automatically determines the service provider?s line configuration, ensuring the quickest access possible.

Compatibility and Flexibility
The USB port may be accessed by any personal computer using the Windows 98 or Windows 2000 operating system; the Ethernet port is compatible with any Intel-based PC, Apple Macintosh, UNIX or LINUX system with a 10BASE-T Ethernet NIC.

The Dual Link modem also provides investment protection by supporting popular DSL connection models (including RFC-1483, PPP-over-Ethernet and PPP-over-ATM), using a consistent interface in each case. In addition, the ADSL Modem Dual Link can reach downstream speeds of up to 8 Mbps and upstream speeds of up to 1 Mbps. (Actual speeds obtained may vary depending on offerings from local broadband service providers.)

3Com?s HomeConnect ADSL Modem Dual Link is an excellent example of 3Com?s strategy for providing e-Networks to its customers. For the home user this new modem results in easier access to the network and the most desirable applications, as well as increased availability of the network for more users. All 3Com products -- including the Dual Link modem -- provide a solid, reliable foundation for all networking needs, either at home, at work or on the go.
