I hated the days when I had to diagnose a problem from a distant phone call and could not immediately verify my hypothesis. I'm pretty sure I've got a handle on this one, and the more they look at resources, the more they are only going to find the trigger, and not the root problem.
deep quality issue - it's not.
Like most bugs, the cause is simple, just not seen lately, The solution will take a little thinking but requires only average engineering. It's just that Compaq, guided by their vendors, are looking in the wrong place. The real answer was in the Register article.
