I mean incentive stock options neo, not stock options you buy on the cboe - this is where a startup company will grant you a piece of the company in lieu of cash payout. It is a kind of payment, but it is not a salary because it is equity and as such carries the same risk as any capital - you are risking your time and energy for this perceived payout, it should be treated as a capital gain and is not (anymore now that SS is bust). The long term argument is invalid because iso's are 4 year deals I believe, longer than the lt hold period for capital gains.
