Jim, A good deal for Intel...they paid $20M for a $250M" <G>

Coincidentally, $20M was approximately the earnings shortfall....

Thanks for posting that article.

The best quotes:

Partnering with AMD won't be new for Gateway. Last year, Gateway featured AMD processors in some of its low-end systems. Gateway, however, decided to phase out the AMD chips and rely solely on Intel's products after Intel "got more aggressive from a pricing standpoint."

That decision was a costly miscalculation, company officials said.

"We didn't anticipate [supply problems], obviously, when we moved the lion's share of our product line back to Intel," Weitzen said. "It's been a particularly aggravating quarter, quite frankly."

Early October 1999:

Intel: C'mon baby I love you.
GTW: Oh, I love you too, but will you respect me in the morning?
Intel: Sure, baby, sure. I love you baby.

Three months later:

<"Let me say that it's an understatement when I tell you that we're all intensely frustrated by the supply situation we found ourselves put in," said Jeff Weitzen, Gateway's president and CEO, during a conference call announcing the company's lower earnings forecast. "We are not about to stand by and let the actions of others dictate what products Gateway customers can buy." >

Jim, Now that Gtw has signed a five year deal with Mu AMd should hold out for the same. Gtw would look like fools if they walked away from AMd now having said what they said about inhell.

<A rather gutsy article. <G>
zdnet.com.

"The shortage of chips and processors cost the company up to $250 million, said Gateway Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer John Todd." >

In this industry it is very rare that someone foulmouths a supplier or a customer. Imagine how pissed off Gateway must be to be talking so openly about this topic!

This is the biggest PR setback of any company that I can remember of late.

Hi Jim:

GTW got duped...by Intel's promise of a "some-time-in-the-future" PWeeIII competitor for the Athlon...GTW is now realizing what a long time frame an Intel "some-time-in-the-future" promise can mean!

My, how roles have reversed!
