In Lester Thurow's recent book "Building Wealth" one of his rules is:

RULE TWO: Successful businesses must be willing to cannibalize themselves to save themselves. They must be willing to destroy the old while it is still successful if they wish to build the new before it is successful. If they won't destroy themselves, others will destroy them.

I think Nortel has done a much better job of this than Lucent. As a result Lucent has come up a bit short and Nortel appears to be one of the beneficiaries.

Cisco and the others are more recent companies and have less momentum to change but may still have been slow responding or building the skills, facilities and contacts needed to succeed in the new internet/telcom/multimedia environment.

The nice thing about JDSU is we don't have to be able to pick the winners out of the above - or even worry about Cable vs. Wireless vs. xDSL. Fiber is going to be the long-haul medium for the foreseeable future.

Competitors will spring up .. and this will be good and hopefully keep JDSU on their toes. Until the time someone else is actually nipping at their heels, I think this is one stock to tuck away and not worry about the ups and downs, only the long term trend line and possible new technologies.
