Paul - RE: "They will demonstrate a 1 GHz x86 system, conventionally cooled - at the ISSCC conference in about 4 weeks."

I was going through the ISSCC website to see if AMD was going to be there and came up with nothing. But I did find this -

"25.7 The First-Generation IA-64 Microprocessor 4:45 PM
G. Singer, S. Rusu
Intel Corp., Santa Clara, CA
This microprocessor implements the IA-64 architecture, and provides binary compatibilty with the IA-32 instruction set. The device contains 25.4M transistors. The chip is manufactured in a 0.18 um CMOS with 6 metal layers and is packaged in a 1012-pad organic land grid array using C4 assembly technology."

This is the only time I have seen a transistor count for it. But it isn't like I'm on a search for info on it...

Looks like HotRail will be there.

"15.6 A Scalable 32Gb/s Parallel Data Transceiver with
On-Chip Timing Calibration Circuits
4:15 PM
K. Yang, T. Lin, Y. Ke
HotRail, Inc., San Jose, CA
A parallel data transceiver provides point-to-point interconnect between chips. Data transfer rate per differential pair is 1.6Gb/s. An on-chip timing calibration circuit performs data de-skewing and timing optimization. The macro consumes <400mW with <8ns latency and <10 -15 BER. In 0.25 um CMOS and measures 2500x700 um2 using BGA or QFP packages. Built-in self test (BIST) logic is implemented for product testing."

What do you mean by "conventionaly cooled"? Same size fan, sink and spreader as PIII?
