That is a fair assessment--LU customers want the newer stuff
and not the old circuit switch stuff. Problem is that a lot
of the newer stuff is vaporware, never mind a manufacturing
problem.

That's the way I am reading it too. I bet this isn't just a one quarter set back, it's more like a 6 month set back during which Lucent will struggle to get their credibility back. What a blow. I knew we would see something like this eventually, but what surprised me is twofold: 1) I didn't think we'd see it this soon and 2) I didn't think Lucent's own management would be the cause of the screw up, I thought it would be Nortel or Cisco taking market share away from them.

The fact that it was Lucent's management's fault tells me that Lucent has a long term problem. They have all the tools for success, but without great leadership, they are doomed to mediocrity. The only thing that will keep pulling management's but out of the fire will be good old Bell Labs.

Like I have said before, if you have extra money, forget Lucent, put your money in Nortel or Cisco. If we see $95 tomorrow, I'll buy some more Cisco. Good luck everyone!

Eric, there have been recent industry reports that the circuit switches are selling in record numbers. I do not see that as a problem. Overall, they are missing by a max of 1.4 billion, or 12.5% or so of total expectations. They may only miss by 10%. That does not mean that the entire company is in decline. McGinn's explanations could easily account for that number. The loss of 16 channel optical sales alone must be huge. Brian
