As I understand it, this treatment has nothing to do with the elderly, and everything to do with class warfare politics being waged by the likes of socialists in congress and the President. Gephardt, Bonior and crowd bitched loudly about Sil Valley millionaires and schemed to screw them.

So, in effect, as a dem, you screwed yourself.


Well, I am in favor of flat taxes for all income - investment and other so I agree that this was bad legislation to tax options in this way. However, what really bothers me about it is the removal of the medicare cap so that those that do exercise stock options can easily pay 10K or more in one year for medicare... while windfalls in the markets that are not related to stock options - hedge fund holders and the like - pay NO medicare tax. The chances of a stock option exerciser being eligible for medicare is nil. Otoh the number of medicare recipients who come into large capital gains is probably high. Give me a break!
