Regulation Renaissance?
By Ryan Tate
January 10, 2000

Get-Rich Tip: Beware the government; it's on Internet time now.

Friday the FCC Chairman warned cable companies and electronics makers to hurry up, already, and agree on the standards needed to deliver digital, high-definition television over cable lines. If they don't, the government will step in and dictate the standard. The pronouncement came -- like most tech news in the last few days -- out of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and at a time when prices for digitial TV sets are falling to practical levels and their popularity is increasing. The move could mark the beginning of a new regulatory assertiveness toward electronic devices and networks, including the Internet, where the government has been loath to interfere in disputes over such matters as new top-level domains (like ".biz" and ".sex") and customer-tracking on the Web.
