It is interesting, and I think that if true, the manipulation of the cash commodity is yet another reflection of the limited supplies of palladium available.

The smoke and mirrors around Russian exports, remarks about Noril'sk's diminishing resources by Franco Nevada executive(s) a few months ago, other such 'information', and Johnson Matthey's factual analyses and projections all point to restricted supplies relative to demand. Restricted supplies in a relatively small, specialized market enable manipulation.

No matter how you cut it, I think palladium prices will continue to reflect all this tightness and turmoil for a long time to come, perhaps many years.

AngloAmerican Platinum CEO interview on Russian PGM supply.-

----snip----
"...I think they've been very, very responsible in their sales of palladium from stock in recent years.
----snip----
"All of the [platinum] production for 1999 was not sold. There's a possibility, therefore, that during the 2000 calendar year, the Russians will make more platinum available than has been the case in the past, or in the immediate past....And, in fact, if the marketers are left to market the platinum, they do a very, very good job of it, as they've done with palladium in the past couple of years.
----snip----
"Norilsk, which is the major producer in Russia, because of the very high palladium prices, is awash in roubles and does not need cash."
