IBM Microelectronics also received a patent (5,920,359) for video encoding for set-top-boxes that improves picture quality of television images. This is intended to allow TVs to deliver expanded services, including the Internet. [The "encoder" is a display encoder, not an MPEG-2 encoder.]

Roehm Introduces PMMA for DVDs
nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com

German-based Roehm GmbH, a leading manufacturer of methacrylate-based
products introduced a Plexiglass solution for optical disks, including digital video
discs.

Plexiglas has been a trademark product for the company since 1933 and is
currently made into products which are used in households, optical and offices,
medicine, electronics, buildings, traffic signals, and lighting. Plexiglas DQ501, is
a PMMA solution which the company believes is far superior to the
polycarbonate that is currently used by most optical disk manufacturers.

The solution has a very low birefringence of less than 20 nanometers, 92
percent light transmission, high surface hardness and mar resistance. "The
DQ501 is the closest material to glass available and transparency is a vital issue
when it comes to products with such high density.

It allows the precise reproduction of even the smallest pits," said Dr
Hans-J_rgen Kress, senior vice president, PMMA Moulding & Extrusion
Compounds/ Pharma Polymers.
