Washington, DC, Jan. 07, 2000 (CBS Marketwatch via COMTEX) -- Microsoft Corp. halted $400 rebates for consumers in California and Oregon who agreed to contracts for its Internet access service. The company said thousands of people had signed up, spent the cash, and canceled the contracts, the Associated Press reported. "This is just a shame," said Microsoft spokesman Tom Pilla. Microsoft offered the rebate nationwide. In most states, anyone who canceled service in less than three years had to return the rebate, but company officials said loopholes in state laws prevented them from adopting that provision in comprehensive California and Oregon. Microsoft reportedly planned to make changes in its offer to close the loophole and resume the rebates.
