Hi Jim:

The Athlon is testimony that Dirk is the best there is in the lab! It took a solid management team from bottom to recognize Dirk's talent and to provide Dirk with the environment and personnel he required to bring "his vision" to life...To paraphrse Dirk at completion of his task: "It's now in the hands of our production people in whom I have faith will successfully produce the Athlon". Prior to launching, the president, Mr. Raza, resigned amidst much negative speculation. Once the Athlon was produced it took management personnel to overcome numerous obstacles, not the least of which was the mobo shortage, a function of the Taiwan earthquake and possibly Intel's heavy hand..No doubt there were dark periods over the past 6 months which a unified and courageous management team overcame becuase they had a vision of the future...a vision where it was not ridiculous to believe that a changing of the guard was a possibility...Looking back from January 2000, who'd have thought in May 1999 that AMD could have come so far in such a short time...And that could not have happenned without both an exceptional product and an exceptional management team...No doubt it could not have happenned without Dirk, but it couldn't have happenned without some gutsy management decision making throughout the period...I wouldn't pretend to know any of AMD management, but I do like their integrity, their outstanding judgment and their panache!

Jim, re:So if Dirk lead the Athlon design team then he's gets most of the credit from me.

True, but it wouldn't have been possible if the ship was not kept afloat while being under the most intense competitive pressure from one of the premier company in the industry.
