JDSU is not a Canadian company. It is American based after the merger. Uniphase, an American company, took control after they acquired JDS Fitel. JDSU does have significant operations up here (like many other companies).
I wish i had saved the posts of a couple of knowledgable people who explained the issue.
JDU trade as Canadian for RRSPs. I believe the company may have been accomodating canadian mutual fund holders. I will see if i can dig up those posts (or maybe someone else can--especially the person who posted the explanation).

jdsu will be added to the s$p 500 soon....

there are no current restrictions on foreign companies being
include in s&p 500...some are already there eg. nortel

however speculation is that in the near future only american
companies will be in s&p 500 because s&p will be developing
a new canadian index and will not want duplications

again however jdsu in an american company....therefore no
current or future restrictions and of course that beautiful
extra valuation not accorded to "foreigners"
