Malcolm great post. As someone who has to regularly attend meetings of margin anonymous, I have to agree that fear is much stronger than greed. In the three or so years I used margin, I had maybe 3 or four margin calls. But that didn't lose me nearly as much money as the many times I sold at the bottom to avoid a margin call. Excess margin is a sure way to sell at the bottom. Been there done that.

I still have a margin account, but now I am more careful in how and when I use it.

Malcolm,

It seems to me frankly that if you don't have much money but can lurk at some SI boards where you get to read the analyses of Mike Buckley, DownSouth, UncleFrank,etc. then if you have patience you will eventually become rich without margin. If you are already rich then the only common way you can get poor is by borrowing money, JMHO.

Notwithstanding the comment about that guy, Mike Buckley, I agree with you entirely.
