I think you are confused - IBM shipped nearly 9 million PCs last year, they are the #3 vendor worldwide. They dropped out in the retail consumer business, where they were weak and losing money, to go after direct consumer distribution - but this only amounted to about 15% of their PC unit total. Both DELL and IBM were using Inacom for BTO, and I don't know if this was primarily to business customers but I think so, there is not much BTO in consumer, even DELL is batching that segment.
