I am in this position a lot. My firm allows me to have the option exercised automatically even if there is not enough cash in the account to buy. I must sell the stock then on the Monday following the expiration. This is sometimes beneficial when an option has a 2 point spread between the bid and ask on the expiration. Who wants to get screwed out of a point with only minutes to go. So, I take the stock and sell on the following Monday.
