Well, when I was a student in engineering, politics, ideology, and racism were not significant factors. They never came up in the lectures.

I guess in a Liberal Arts program these might be a factors since these professors are more concerned about opinions and ideology rather than how to properly model the physical behavior of various things using mathematics.

The problems I ran into were mainly due to language problems -- one class (lab) I took, the instructor (grad student) could not speak English at all, he could only read it. We had another grad student in for the first ten minutes giving the lecture.
