ML, thanks for the excellent explanation of the advantages of the G* technology. I posted on somewhat different issues on the yahoo message board as follows:

Need an(d) Image Plus Affordability=G*

Those complaining about the price of G* phones probably only need to look at the constellation of equipment right in front of them to gain perspective (as well as how much the price of that type of equipment has gone down over time). Further, $1500 for a handset (which will also go down) is a lot less than many on Welfare spend on the lottery per year, never mind the sums middle-class Americans feel they need to spend on slot machines, etc.??

Clearly G* is not limited solely to the Spartan sense of affordability (certainly in our affluent society) recently expressed by some analysts (to use the term loosely) as long as G* works well and can become "hot." Nor is G* limited only to regions encompassing legitimate need, although the available business in those areas is more than sufficient. Need is not the only motivation and in the land of affluence, it is not even close to the primary motivation. All you have to do is walk around a place like Manhattan and count the number of SUV's per block. Why do so many Manhattanites need an SUV? They are certainly not crashing through dirt road under- and over-brush in Manhattan. Obviously many of them are thinking that any day now they are going to set off on a trek from NYC to Tierra del Fuego (or at least upstate to follow moose and buffalo around or look for dinosaur bones, etc.). In that case, a G* phone will come in handy and will have to be made a part of the arsenal of the SUV as well as of the adventurous mind.

This is aside from the possibility that at some point it may become the case that 48 satellites or so are more efficient(and eventually just as inexpensive per minute) as well as easier to maintain than thousands of towers weathering away all over the place.
