There have been some great discussions this week and now that it's saturday, I have a chance to post responses to some of them. This is a relatively long post and somewhat OT so feel free to click on.... "The Millionaire Next Door" I read the book when it first came out and while I respect and admire many of the traits/qualities mentioned in the book, I would offer that a balanced approach works best for me. Being vigilant when it comes to managing debt and saving is very important, but enjoying and sharing the success you have achieved is just as important. One of the things that I learned early on as a salesman was positive reenforcement. It's not completely bad to reward yourself. One more perspective; I lost my mom when she was 44. One of the many lessons I learned from this was that life is fleeting and precious. Enjoy it and your family while you can. Margin Thanks for the excellent discussion on this topic. While I never go beyond 20% margin, I have found it to be an effective way to take advantage of short term opportunities the market affords us (as experienced this week). That being said, I am a GGer in the truest sense and no longer place "bets" on companies. Investing in the companies which meet GG requirements afford me some level of comfort when using margin. Of course, I still have a job so a tad bit more risk is tolerable <<gg>> . Cocaine Bill Cosby once asked a friend "why do you like cocaine". The friend replied "it intensifies your personality". Cosby responded "but what if your an a**hole?" In closing, at dinner one night this week, my wife and I were discussing the correction and I was explaining to her why I was still very positive in the face of the correction. She mentioned some facts re: QCOM and also mentioned some of the off the wall stuff heard on threads. When I asked where she found the info she replied that she had been reading the Yahoo thread. (She, like several of the "elders" on this thread doesn't work <g>). I immediately helped her set up an account on SI and bookmarked the GK and QCOM threads. She, needless to say, is hooked. Have a great weekend and thanks for the excellent info shared on this thread.
