Neocon, I am in sort of a hurry right now, so I will just deal with a little bit of your post, the part about crucifixion. Crucifixion was a very common punishment for Jews under Roman rule, for criminals and "rebels" alike. The story of Jesus on the cross was dramatized later, and there are differences in the Gospels as more time elapsed. It is fairly clear that the Romans did not perceive Jesus to be a huge threat to them, but more of a minor annoyance.

I will try to come back later and discuss the differences in the Gospels further, but this url from the PBS Frontline series on Jesus covers the crucifixion itself in great detail, as well as what the Gospels said about it later. It is taken from interviews with academic theologians. You might enjoy reading it:
