Hewlett-Packard and Hughes Network Systems are among Industry Leaders to adopt
Centura Technology for Cutting-edge Intelligent Devices

REDWOOD SHORES, Cal., August 5, 1999 -- Centura© Software Corporation (NASDAQ:
CNTR), leader of secure, embedded micro and e-business databases and development solutions,
has staked out a leadership position in data management technology for Internet Appliances and
other intelligent devices. According to the Dataquest research firm, the data management market
alone for these types of devices is expected to grow to $110 million by year 2003. While much of
the buzz surrounding this ?next wave? of computing has speculated on the mere possibility of such
devices, Centura has posted solid, growing sales in this segment, and Centura?s micro-database
technology has been adopted for numerous pioneering intelligent device products.

The industry term ?intelligent devices? describes the growing class of non-PC devices that store
and manipulate data. This category includes set-top boxes, industrial controllers, office equipment,
consumer appliances, Internet access devices (or Internet Appliances), and many
telecommunications components requiring sophisticated data management.

Centura-based Internet Appliances include the new Internet-enabled set-top box currently in
development by Hughes Network Systems, for use in the AOLTV and DIRECTV services. This
device will use Raima Database Manager for VxWorks (RDM/Vx) as the basis of an interactive
programming guide. RDM has also been designed into other intelligent devices including new
office equipment from Hewlett-Packard as well as Sigma Game?s intelligent casino slot machines.

While the concept of a database management system is more often associated with Enterprise
applications rather than with embedded devices and RTOSs, Centura?s micro-database
technology is emerging as a critical tool that can enhance performance, cut time-to-market, and
meet the demanding small footprint requirements of today?s emerging devices.

?Adopting RDM for VxWorks cut months from our development and QA cycles. As our device
evolved to become more multi-functional and manage more complex information, it was critical
that it incorporate this kind of proven data management tool,? said Maurizio Monesi, Product
Architect of the Hewlett-Packard 9100C Digital Sender.

Over the past two years, Centura has built strong relationships with major market players, such as
Wind River Systems, developer of the industry leading Tornado development environment and
VxWorks real-time operating system. The joint efforts of Centura and Wind River Systems were
critical to the creation of the Hewlett-Packard 9100C Digital Sender and Hughes Network
Systems? Internet-enabled set-top box currently under development.

Additionally, Centura Professional Services Corporation, Centura Software?s consulting
organization, has worked extensively with customers in the intelligent device and Internet
Appliance segment, and played an important role in helping them achieve their development goals.
Centura Professional Services provides RTOS experts that deliver a wide range of services,
including database design, application development, and performance optimization.
