Audie & Wireless Gorilla Hunters, << implications of what ... announced Tuesday >> Rather than clutter this thread with press releases about the recent Vodafone AirTouch announcements I thought I would include a short summary of todays news and links to articles on the same subject. Many of us, whose wireless investment of choice is QCOM, were perhaps a bit disappointed that there were few specific references to CDMA in the announcements. I personally see an upside. Vodafone AirTouch's vision is as immense as their expanding worldwide footprint. We focus here a lot on "wireless voice and data" with a strong emphasis on "wireless data". We talk about 3G because it has significant implications for those of us invested in Qualcomm (another Tornado surrounding the IPR of Qualcomms air interface). I am not touting VOD. I simply happen to applaud both their vision an the attention they are calling to the future of "wireless voice and DATA", and the the pressure they will be putting on all vendors to converge technologies quickly, hastening the first of several new tornadoes. It occurs to me that the "Handheld Game" started by John recently takes on real significance (note references to Nokia, Ericsson, Palm Computing and Psion, below) as an arena we should keep an eye on for G&K investment targets. - EriQ - >> WORLD WIDE WEB GAINS 4TH "W" With amazing speed, Vodafone AirTouch has assembled a star-studded list of new technology and content companies as it prepares to launch a single worldwide platform for wireless data and the Internet. Vodafone CEO Chris Gent said the company will make wireless Internet ubiquitous: "From now on it will be the World Wide Wireless Web." The "who's who" includes initial partners IBM and Sun Microsystems, which will integrate the new system and supply hardware; Nokia, Ericsson, Palm Computing and Psion, which will work on manufacturing issues, and content providers Infospace.com, Charles Schwab and Travelocity. (CBS MarketWatch) (Reuters) (British Broadcasting Corp) The Vodafone announcement is part of a broader strategy to woo Mannesmann shareholders, who are now considering whether to allow Vodafone to buy the German telecom. But even some usually jaded analysts gave the company kudos for the quality of the deals, and the lightning speed in which they were cut. << Here are a set of links to stories on the subject: VODAFONE WOOS MANNESMANN WITH WIRELESS NET SERVICES (By Bloomberg News - Special to CNET News.com)news.cnet.com VODAFONE RAISES PRESSURE - Cellular firm unveils Net platform (CNNfn) cnnfn.com IBM to Run Internet Site for Vodafone AirTouch, Linking Cell Phones & Web (Bloomberg Technology News)quote.bloomberg.com VODAFONE AIRTOUCH TEAMS WITH CISCO, HYUNDAI ELECTRONICS, AND TELOS TECHNOLOGY ON SUCCESSFUL WIRELESS IP DEMONSTRATION (Vodaphone 16-Dec-1999)vodafone-airtouch-plc.com VODAFONE AND BBC SET THE STANDARDS FOR FUTURE MOBILE AND MULTIMEDIA SERVICES (Vodaphone 16-Dec-1999)vodafone-airtouch-plc.com - EriQ -
