Mike: On gorillas and kings. If you are convinced that kings (and therefore all royalty) are inferior to any gorilla related investments (including niche chimps) and not worth considering - even to the extent of DD - how do you choose potential gorillas?

Do you look for babies which may turn into gorillas someday or what is your approach? In other words, where and how do you search?

Merlin,

<< I don't see a compelling reason to invest in a King, a fundamentally inferior investment over the very long haul >>

On Kings (Market Leaders) ... (hold them lightly)

"Kings enjoy a number of gorilla-like benefits ..." (page 63ff of RFM)"

... and Kings and Princes (Dell, EMC, AOL, et al) were the best performing stocks of the last decade, not their zoological cousins).

>> Because given the alternative of investing in Gorillas which don't pose those
issues, I don't see a compelling reason to invest in a King, a fundamentally
inferior investment over the very long haul that isn't even as strong as a chimp
that dominates a niche market.

Darn, I have to agree with you again <g>. Why not play the sure thing? I guess some
folks love the thrill of discovery; I just want the thrill of great returns.

We got a nice taste of a market downturn on Tuesday through Thursday. This one was
brief, but I heard some wailing on other threads about margin squeezes and deteriorating
time premiums on calls. Let's see how the Gorillas fared versus Royalty and
Snowball investments:

Stock Category Closing 1/3 Closing 1/6 Delta
CSCO SILVERBACK 108.0625 100.0 -7.5%
MSFT SILVERBACK 116.5625 110.0 -6.6%
INTC SILVERBACK 86.875 78.75 -9.4%
QCOM GORILLA 179.3125 140.0625 -21.9%
GMST GORILLA? 69.375 62.5 -10.0%
SEBL GORILLA? 85.0 69.0 -18.8%
CTXS GORILLA? 128.125 105.0 -18.0%
JSDU KING 188.0 149.75 -20.4%
NTAP KING 85.0 70.0625 -17.6%
CREE PRE-TORNADO 83.9375 66.6875 -20.6%
WIND PRE-TORNADO 36.0625 32.0 -12.3%
ARMHY PRE-TORNADO 199.25 153.5 -23.0%

Looks like another strong case for the Silverbacks. The young Gorillas didn't
fare any better than the Royalty or pre-Tornado candidates.

I hope the gang will prepare for the possibility of another more severe downturn
by making sure they are weighted towards secure Gorilla investments.
