CBG,

I think as a matter of practicality there are probably statistically "nil" the number of elderly that are living in "million dollar" homes scraping by with their SS check...

I see a need to means test SS in it's current form. I'm for reducing or eliminating benefits for the wealthy "elderly" and RAISING the benefits for the truly needy elderly. We should also eliminate this completely idiotic notion of limiting the benefits of the moderate to average retiree who wants to augment their income by working.

You are making MY point about the children and grandchildren "complaining" if the parents were required to "dip into" their wealth in order to preserve their inheritance. SS was never meant to be a vehicle to preserve wealth for the next generation. It was devised as a means to support individuals who were either unable or unwilling to adequately prepare for their retirement. There are methods to distribute your assets to your children and grandchildren before you die, so this really should not be an issue.

Again you are making my point about the demographics when it comes to the SS recipient vs the payers. Just how long have we been aware of the disparity in the generation numbers? It's obscene to me that we refuse to take real measures to reduce the liability of the next generation.

Your point about our standard of living begs the issue of the fairness of the SS taxes. This is America! If you work hard enough and you want 10 SUV's, that's your choice. I feel sorry for your children if you don't harbor the desire within yourself to see them have a more properity than you have. Both of my (grown) children are striving for a full and prosperous life. I sincerely hope they will be able to ultimately "do better" than their parents. It will be extremely difficult for them, if we as a generation insist upon robbing them of financial incentive to move ahead.
