<<PB, it has come to my attention that Fujitsu has just released SPECFP95 scores for a 733MHz CuMine that are pretty amazing. Over 30!>

Wow. That's slightly askew form this result:

Note the compilers and configurations and adjust for availability and cost.

PBoy, <Wow. That's slightly askew form this result>

Yes, the published "30" is a big askew from the
realm of "18". The "SPECfp95=18" is actually what
are you paying for in terms of real-world performance.
I guess the premium goes for the "potential" to make
it "30".

However, there are several big IFs in achieving
the "30"-level of practical performance. If you
are an owner of a network of CAD developer
workstations, there is very remote chance that
your high-cost development package will be
recompiled with the SPEC-special Intel compiler
any time soon. For variety of software reasons.

But if you are switching to Athlon-based workstations,
you will have an INSTANT GAIN - to "25"-level
of general performance, or 38% instant gain to
your productivity, today, and not that elusive
potential of "30" that is promised by Floppermine.

Don't also forget that Athlons have presumably
the same or better potential when similar prefetch
mechanisms will be incorporated into mainstream
compilers. So I guess you need to continue to
hold your breath... Sorry for the inconvenience:)
